We believe that science is best done in teams, and teams work best when a variety of skills, backgrounds, and perspectives are vibrantly represented. Our goal is to have a lab culture where any good idea is seen for what it is. In an abstract sense, the evaluation of ideas shouldn’t depend who or where they come from. However, broad societal discussions have made it clear that there are currently different levels of comfort, access, and voice in the scientific process— and this is something that needs to be fixed. This places a responsibility on all lab members not just to be open-minded in scientific discussions, but to actively support diversity and inclusion across all dimensions, both academic and personal.
